If you are facing a divorce or separation in Spain and need to work out child support, one of the hardest parts is knowing what amount is fair. Different judges could reach very different figures for similar situations, which makes it hard to plan or negotiate with confidence.
To fix this, Spain's General Council of the Judiciary put together the Guiding Tables for the Determination of Child Support in Family Processes. The goal was to cut down on excessive discretion between judges, bring more objectivity into how support amounts are worked out, and make court decisions more predictable for families going through this.
The Tables are based on data from Spain's National Institute of Statistics about the real cost of supporting dependent children.
The Council also provides an online calculator based on the Tables, so you can work out an estimated figure for your own case in a simple, straightforward way.
Knowing these Tables exist, and that a real calculation tool is available, can take some of the guesswork and anxiety out of a process that often feels uncertain.
