The "nest house" arrangement, where children stay in the family home and parents take turns moving in and out, sounds good in theory. But in practice, it can end up being hard on the children, creating discomfort, tension, and ongoing conflict between the parents who keep crossing paths in the same space. If this is happening in your situation, it helps to know there are other options.
The most common alternative is to end the joint ownership of the family home altogether. One parent keeps the home, and pays the other parent fair compensation for their share.
But this is not always realistic financially. When buying out the other parent is not an option, there is another route: one ex-spouse keeps the right to live in the home, and pays the other a monthly amount in return, similar to paying rent.
